Partnership with Tesla Expands Fast-Charging Options for Ford Electric Vehicles
Ford Motor Company has announced a groundbreaking agreement with Tesla Motors, set to transform charging infrastructure for its electric vehicle (EV) customers. From early 2024, Ford EV customers will gain access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in the United States and Canada. This agreement effectively doubles the fast-charging options for them.
This Ford–Tesla collaboration is a notable milestone in the EV industry. It provides Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit owners with unmatched fast-charging access. With an adapter and software integration, Ford EV drivers can now seamlessly use the vast Tesla Supercharger network. This is in addition to the over 10,000 existing DC fast-chargers within the BlueOval Charge Network.
Ford’s President and CEO, Jim Farley, expressed his excitement about the groundbreaking agreement, stating:
“This is great news for our customers who will have unprecedented access to the largest network of fast-chargers in the U.S. and Canada. Widespread access to fast-charging is absolutely vital to our growth as an EV brand, and this breakthrough agreement comes as we are ramping up production of our popular Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, and preparing to launch a series of next-generation EVs starting in 2025.”
The agreement also paves the way for future developments, as Ford plans to integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector into its upcoming electric vehicles. By 2025, Ford EVs will come equipped with the NACS charge port, eliminating the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers.
Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure, emphasized the shared vision between the two companies, stating:
“We’re excited to deliver on our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy by welcoming Ford owners, and other electric vehicles who adopt NACS, to our thousands of Superchargers across North America.”
Emma Bergg, Director of EV and BlueOval City Communications at Ford Motor Company, clarified on Twitter about the possibility, but not confirmation, of dual charging ports:
“There is a transition period… we’re engineering for NACS starting in ‘25. Having both inlet ports is an option for us – but nothing more to share right now. More to come!” [@ebergg]
Ford and Tesla’s collaboration will greatly benefit Ford EV customers by providing an extensive charging network. This move is set to ease range anxiety among drivers. Seamless integration will direct drivers to the nearest charger automatically. Additionally, billing integration through FordPass will enhance the overall charging experience.
Ford plans to enhance its charging infrastructure significantly. Around 1,800 public-facing fast-chargers will be added to the BlueOval Charge Network by early 2024. Currently, this network boasts being North America’s largest public charging network. It consists of more than 84,000 chargers, which include access to over 10,000 public DC fast-chargers.
Ford is solidifying its commitment to superior electric vehicle ownership experiences through this creative partnership. By leveraging the Ford EV Tesla Superchargers, they’re expanding their charging capabilities. This move supports the widespread adoption of sustainable transportation.
