Discover the future of electric sedans with the Tesla Model 3 today at EV Universe! About the Tesla Model 3 In July 2017, Model 3s started to trickle out of the Tesla Fremont Factory. This new mid-sized 4-door sedan was a radical departure for Tesla, which had, up to this point, focused its attention on the upscale, full-sized Model S. Even with early production delays, the Model 3 was a sales success, quickly surpassing the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf as the highest-selling electric car ever produced. Model 3 Trims The Model 3 was initially available in Long Range form with rear-wheel drive only. This version lasted from 2017 through 2019. Over time, new models appeared: ● Long Range AWD in 2018 ● Long-Range AWD Performance in 2018 ● Mid Range RWD from 2018 to 2019 ● Standard Range RWD in 2019 ● Standard Range Plus RWD from 2019 to 2021 The name “Standard Range RWD” has been applied to two different models. The initial version was produced from 2019 to 2020, and the current version features a more powerful battery, more range, and slightly less horsepower. Powertrain Rear-wheel drive models have one motor, while all-wheel drive versions use two. The range of power and performance is considerable. Most rear-wheel drive versions have 283 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, though the current 2022 Tesla Model 3 and Standard Range RWD models have 279 hp. The Long Range AWD model has 346 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, while the AWD Performance has 450 hp and 471 lb-ft of torque. All of Tesla’s vehicles have one-speed transmissions. Performance The acceleration of most rear-wheel drive Model 3s is certainly brisk, with 0-60 times between 5 and 6 seconds, depending on options that may add or subtract weight. Long Range AWD models, with their added traction and power, can reach 60 mph in about 4 seconds. The most powerful model, the AWD Performance, can sprint to 60 mph in as little as 3.1 seconds. Like most EVs, Model 3s are heavy for their size thanks to the massive batteries required to power them. Rear-wheel drive models range from about 3,500 to 3,800 pounds, with all-wheel drive models coming in over 4,000 pounds. Even with this weight, the Performance AWD model can achieve up to 0.96 G on the skidpad, which would have been supercar territory as recently as 15 years ago. Remember that even the most powerful EVs still have trouble keeping up with internal combustion engine-powered cars around a track when the laps increase. This has to do with the cooling efficiency and the toll that most Ev's high weight take on brakes and tires. Still, few vehicles can keep up when a Model 3 Performance AWD uses all its power. Range Teslas are known for having some of the best ranges of all EVs, and Model 3 is no exception. The shortest range model was the 2019 and 2020 Standard Range RWD, which have an EPA estimated range of 220 miles. The 2019 through 2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus topped out at 263 miles. The current Standard and discontinued Mid Range models can go an EPA-estimated 264 to 272 miles before charging. The Long Range models certainly live up to their name, with the discontinued Long Range RWD achieving an EPA-estimated 330 miles, the Long Range AWD up to 358 miles, and the Performance getting up to 322 miles. Battery Capacity and Charging Tesla currently has the most widespread charging network with its numerous Supercharger stations around the country. It’s become so dominant that GM, Ford, and Rivian plan to adopt Tesla’s charging port for their vehicles in the next few years. The capacities for batteries are: ● 2019 Standard Range RWD - As little as 50 kWh usable ● Standard Range Plus RWD - 54 kWh ● Current Standard Range RWD - 57.7 kWh ● Mid-Range RWD - 62 kWh ● 2017 to 2020 Long-Range Models - 75 kWh ● 2021 to Current Long-Range Models - 82 kWh All versions of the Model 3 can charge at a max of 11 kW, which means that recharging from 0% to 100% can take anywhere from 6 to 8.5 hours with a type 2 charger. With a Tesla Supercharger, a Model 3 can regain 175 miles in as little as 15 minutes. Regarding efficiency, all Model 3s achieve between 113 MPGe and 141 MPGe. Tech Teslas have always made the center screen a focal point in their vehicles, but the Model 3 is more minimalist than a conventional auto. All car functions route through that landscape-oriented 15-inch screen, including climate controls, navigation, and even the heated/cooled seats. While most modern vehicles have integrated screens, this is an area Tesla pioneered and continues to innovate. Owners can watch streaming services, play video games, and even sing karaoke through the built-in infotainment touchscreen. Over-the-air updates can even improve a Tesla with new apps and performance-related features that increase horsepower. Another famous feature is Autopilot, one of the most advanced driver assistance systems on the market. It is not “self-driving” in the sense that occupants can completely ignore the road, but it will steer, accelerate, and brake without input from the driver to make long drives much less tiresome. In addition, Autopark takes over parallel parking duties, and Summon can move a Model 3 in and out of parking spaces. These features are not standard, however. Owners must pay Tesla to activate them. Model 3s also continue the trend started by Tesla of ditching traditional keys. Owners can opt for a fob, an NFC keycard, or the owner’s smartphone to access the car. Interior As a mid-sized sedan, it's important to note that rear-seat passengers over six feet tall may not find their ride particularly comfortable. One trade-off for enhancing fuel economy in most electric vehicles (EVs) is the adoption of a streamlined, teardrop-shaped design to enhance aerodynamics. While this design choice greatly benefits the vehicle's efficiency, it does come at the expense of headroom. On the other hand, front occupants are bestowed with generous space, accompanied by the added comfort of standard heated seats. While heads may have to hunch, no one will complain about the spacious, flat floor. With no driveshaft running through the center of the car, exhaust pipes, or any of the necessary accouterments that come with gas-powered cars, Tesla can make the floor whatever shape it pleases. No matter where passengers are seated, the impressive feature that immediately catches their attention in the Model 3 is the expansive glass roof. This massive panoramic view is undeniably striking, and in the newer models, it even has the ability to open. Should the sunlight become bothersome to occupants, Tesla offers the convenience of purchasing a sunshade, although there are also plenty of aftermarket options available in the market to cater to individual preferences. Safety The Insurance Institute Highway Safety organization rates the Model 3 at the top for safety, with excellent ratings for crashworthiness, crash avoidance, and crash mitigation. Passive safety 9 measures include a phenomenally strong structure made of aluminum and steel, and the glass roof can withstand the weight of 4 Model 3s stacked on top of each other. Front and side curtain airbags protect occupants from collisions at nearly every angle. Active safety systems also work to prevent accidents. Automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection, lane departure warning and assist, and daytime running lights all make the Model 3 safe. Value Tesla Model 3s depreciate much slower than similar cars. After three years, owners can expect their Model 3s to hold on to as much as 90% of their value. Compared to electric offerings from other companies, such as the Chevrolet Bolt or BMW i3, Tesla is the one to buy if depreciation is a deciding factor. In fact, the Model 3 depreciates less quickly than other Teslas. While a Model 3 will drop about 10% of its value over three years, a Model Y will lose about 23%, while a Model S or Model X will lose between 34% and 36%. This metric does depend on condition and options, of course, with desirable models such as a Long Range AWD Performance model with low mileage and pristine maintenance records commanding a premium. Design Controversial upon release, the Model 3’s impact on the automotive industry's design language cannot be denied. A notable example is the absence of a traditional grille. Electric vehicles (EVs) don't require grilles for cooling purposes, as there's no combustion engine that necessitates chilled coolant. Recognizing this, the Model 3 deliberately omitted the grille from its design. Rather than adopting a flashy and extravagant appearance reminiscent of a supercar, the Model 3 boasts a sleek and smooth aesthetic, allowing air to effortlessly glide past without any unnecessary drama. 10 The result is an elegant design that prioritizes both form and function. Why Buy a Used Tesla Model 3? Despite increased competition from rival automakers, Teslas are still the de facto standard by which other EVs are made. From resale value to availability of charging stations to service and maintenance support, Teslas are the easiest way to get into EVs, and the Model 3 is the easiest way to get into Tesla. While Model Ss and Xs are still expensive vehicles, new or otherwise, a used Tesla Model 3 for sale represents an affordable solution for someone looking for a reliable, functional electric vehicle. The oldest ones are still less than 10 years old, and buyers have many different variants to choose from. If the goal is to simply buy an EV for around-town driving, a gently used Model 3 Standard Range RWD would be an economical choice. For someone who has a need for speed, a used Tesla Model 3 Performance AWD will provide plenty of thrills and stoplight challenge dominance. Why Buy an Electric Car? If you are considering an EV, you might have pondered whether a hybrid, plug-in or otherwise, would be a better alternative. In the long run, the answer is no. Over time, EVs have drastically lower carbon footprints than even the most economical hybrids. The environmental impact of mining the materials is offset the longer owners keep their EVs. Also, for drivers who love power and acceleration, EVs provide instant and copious torque. With no need to wait for an internal combustion engine to rev up, power comes on now. There is also no need for shifting, which robs precious tenths as the car rockets through the quarter mile. EVs are the performance option. 11 When it comes to maintenance, there’s no contest. EVs have far fewer moving parts than internal combustion-engined vehicles. There’s no engine that requires oil changes or rebuilds, and usually, no transmission that requires fluid changes or clutch replacements. EVs are cheaper to keep going.
