Expanding the Frontiers of EV Battery Technology in Michigan
Toyota Motors North America has unveiled plans for a nearly $50 million investment in a new battery lab at its Michigan R&D headquarters. This pioneering move marks a pivotal moment in North American electric vehicle (EV) development.
Advancing Battery Technology in North America with Toyota’s Electric Battery Lab
Toyota is planning to get the new Michigan battery lab up and running by 2025. This high-tech lab will play a big role in checking and ensuring that Toyota’s electric and hybrid car batteries are top-notch. Shinichi Yasui, a top leader at Toyota in North America, stressed the lab’s important role in helping the company focus more on electric cars.
Collaboration with North American Partners
The Michigan team plans to work with local suppliers. Together, they will use locally-made battery parts. This teamwork supports Toyota’s mission to cut down on pollution. Their offerings include vehicles that are hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, and fully electric.
Beyond Battery Development
Aside from battery development, the lab will conduct evaluations using Level 2 and Level 3 charging. It will also explore connectivity to power sources and infrastructure. Jordan Choby, group vice president of Powertrain at TMNA R&D, noted that the new facility allows the company to experiment with technology and meet advancing business needs.
Expanding the Lab’s Capabilities
In addition to current battery production, engineers at the lab will explore new battery configurations for future products. Toyota sees potential in further expanding the lab’s capabilities, especially in supporting the needs of the battery and BEV ecosystem.
Commitment to Renewable Energy
Toyota’s new facility will participate in DTE Energy’s MIGreenPower program. Starting in 2026, 100% of Toyota’s R&D operations in Michigan will attribute their electricity use to renewable energy projects.
Leading the Charge for a Greener Future in the Automotive Industry with Toyota Electric Battery Lab
With the construction of the Toyota electric battery lab, the automaker showcases its commitment to pushing the boundaries of EV technology. This venture not only helps improve the performance of electrified vehicles but also strengthens Michigan’s position as a leader in mobility’s future. Toyota’s continuous investment in electrification signifies a promising, greener future for the automotive industry.
