At the time of writing this, Tesla claims to have over 30,000 superchargers with the largest global, fast charging network on the planet. For years, Tesla owners have been able to readily find superchargers across the country to charge their EVs.
What’s the catch? Certainly, this charging network is great for Tesla electric cars. But those of you with EVs from other makes like BMW i4, Kia EV6, Audi e-tron, and Ford F-150 Lightning are out of luck. Tesla superchargers don’t currently work with them.
In 2021, Tesla launched a non-Tesla supercharger pilot in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, and Norway. Earlier this year, they expanded the pilot to UK, Spain, Sweden, and Australia. The United States hasn’t made the list yet.
Now for the good news. Tesla recently announced that they will add CCS adapters to their superchargers in the U.S. This would allow drivers with non-Tesla electric cars to charge up as well.
On the flip-side, many of the newer Tesla vehicles can now charge from the non-Tesla DC fast charging stations if they can obtain a CCS-to-Tesla adapter. Though not currently sold by Tesla in the U.S., many Tesla owners are able to have these adapters shipped from overseas or from 3rd party manufacturers.
While the timeline for rolling out CCS adapters at superchargers (for EVs that aren’t Tesla) or Tesla-supplied CCS-to-Tesla adapters (for Tesla owners in the USA) remains unclear, this move could be good overall for the electric vehicle universe.
