About the Tesla Model Y When the Tesla Model 3 appeared in 2017, it marked a crucial shift for Tesla away from an exclusive luxury auto brand to a maker of cars for the everyday buyer. Without the Model 3 forging this path, the Model Y might not exist. Tesla trademarked the name “Model Y” in 2013. The company hinted that the Model Y could become a crossover-style companion to the Model 3, similar to the Model S/Model X situation. In the early stages, the Model Y was to share the Model X’s falcon-wing doors, but to keep the price down, the production Tesla Model Y used traditional doors. The Model Y became a hot seller, with dealer inventory draining as fast as vehicles appeared on lots. By 2023, the Tesla Model Y overtook the Toyota Corolla as the best-selling car in the world. 5 To increase production, Tesla spread Model Y manufacturing to the company’s Giga factories in Berlin, Shanghai, and Austin. Model Y Trims Tesla has produced several versions of the Model Y in its four-year lifespan, including the: ● Standard Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) in 2021 ● Standard Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) in 2021 and 2023 ● Long Range AWD from 2020 to present ● Long Range Performance AWD from 2020 to present Additionally, Tesla planned on building a 2020 Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD but canceled the trim before production began. The company had also planned on offering a Standard Range RWD Tesla Model Y for sale but canceled it as well. The Standard Range Model Y became available for a brief time from January to February of 2021. The company also released a 2022 Tesla Model Y Standard Range, but only in AWD form. Both the Long Range AWD and Performance AWD trims are currently available and are the only trims available in every model year. Powertrain In single-motor Standard configurations, the motor produces between 201 horsepower and 299 horsepower, depending on the specific model version, year, and market. The Long Range models feature dual motors, which combine to produce 384 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. The top-of-the-line Performance AWD model produces 456 horsepower and 497 lb-ft of torque. As with all Teslas, the Model Y uses a single-speed transmission. Performance 6 Even Standard Range Model Ys provide effortless acceleration, with 0-60 times from just over three seconds to just under five. The Long Range AWD can reach 60 in under five seconds, though a $2,000 “Acceleration Boost” option can drop this time to just over four seconds. The Performance AWD trim is the quickest, with 60 mph arriving in as little as 3.5 seconds. The top speed for all Tesla Model Ys is 135 mph, except for the Performance AWD, which can reach 155 mph. With a high center of gravity, handling is excellent during everyday driving, but expect body roll when taking corners during spirited driving. The Model Y’s extra mass also lengthens braking distances. In real-world scenarios, this isn’t an issue, particularly when buyers purchase Model Ys for utility, not track prowess. Batteries and Range According to independent reports, the Tesla Model Y’s battery capacities vary from around 68 kWh for Standard Range models to 75 kWh for Long Range models, though this figure increased to 81 kWh in 2022. Regarding range, the various Model Y trims perform as follows, according to EPA estimates: ● Standard Range RWD: 244 miles ● Standard Range AWD: 279 miles ● Long Range AWD: 326 miles ● Long Range Performance AWD: 303 miles While the two Long Range models use the same battery, the Performance trim consumes more energy, with 13.8 kWh per 100 km for the Long Range AWD and 15.8 kWh per 100 km for the Performance. 7 Charging Tesla’s Supercharger charging network is so pervasive that GM, Ford, and Rivian will be switching their EVs to the Tesla-designed North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port. This is part of the reason a used Tesla Model Y — and indeed most cars Tesla produces — command a premium over rival EVs. Using a Supercharger, which represents Level 3 charging, a Model Y can add 162 miles of range in approximately 15 minutes. Using Level 2 chargers, Model Ys can gain anywhere from 9 to 52 miles of range. Level 2 uses a home’s 240-volt circuit, which offers faster charging than a standard wall outlet, but the charging speed can vary greatly depending on the specific model. A Level 1 120-volt North American outlet will add between two and three miles of range per hour of charging. Tech Other automakers may be catching up in terms of features and tech, but Tesla is renowned as a pioneer for a reason. Every function of the Model Y routes through the center 15.4-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen. Even the gauges live in the center screen, speedometer included. Also, this same screen is home to a bevy of entertainment apps, including streaming services, video games (such as a driving game that uses the car’s steering wheel), and karaoke. Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance program is built into every Model Y. This isn’t “self-driving” but rather a way for the car to reduce the load on the driver. It includes traffic-aware cruise control and autosteer. Enhanced Autopilot is a $6,000 option that adds “navigate on autopilot,” which features 8 automatic steering to highway on and off-ramps and lane change suggestions, as well as auto lane change, Autopark, Summon, and Smart Summon. Full Self-Driving adds $15,000 to a Model Y price tag but allows for more autonomous vehicles and even less stress on drivers. This system features traffic and stop sign control and will eventually add Autosteer on city streets. Even with this system, drivers must supervise the vehicle to ensure safe driving. Interior The added space over the Model 3 places the Model Y in direct competition with other crossovers, such as the Jeep Cherokee. In two-row Model Ys, there is 30.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which grows to 72.1 cubic feet once the second row is folded down. Three-row versions have 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row, 26.6 cubic feet with the third-row seats folded away, and 67.9 cubic feet with the second row stowed. Compared with the Model 3, second-row passengers enjoy an extra inch of headroom due to the taller body design (38.7 inches vs. 37.7 inches). Front seat occupants have a generous 41 inches of headroom. Third-row occupants have 34.6 inches of headroom. While the first and second-row passengers get more than 41 inches of legroom, occupants in the third row have 26.5 inches, as this row is intended for children and small adults. One benefit of the EV design on interior space is the completely flat floor. Rear-center passengers don’t have to straddle a driveshaft hump. Safety Unsurprisingly, the Model Y gets nearly identical safety ratings as its stablemate, the Model 3. 9 The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ranks the Model Y as a Top Safety Pick+. Model Ys have exceptional passive safety, with stiff body structures that keep the passenger compartment intact, while front and rear crumple zones cushion large impacts. Front and side curtain airbags offer superior head protection. Active safety systems, such as automatic emergency braking, prevent vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions, and automated high beams and daytime running lights help with visibility. Some owners report that the daytime running lights won’t stay on for more than a few minutes; however, Tesla offers a free fix for Model Ys under warranty. Design The Model Y can best be described as a Model 3 making a Model X impression. While the Model Y lacks the Model X’s falcon-wing doors, it successfully captures that car’s sloping roofline and tall demeanor. The front end is nearly identical to its platform sibling, the Model 3, with its complete lack of a grille. Why Buy an Electric Car? Whether you want to burn less gas for environmental concerns or you need to lower your fuel budget, an EV will help you accomplish both. As long as you drive an electric vehicle long-term, you can more than offset the carbon footprint it made when it was assembled. And if you want pin-passengers-to-their-seats acceleration, you’ll find it every time you punch a powerful EV’s accelerator. Electric motors generate substantial amounts of torque from 0 RPM, meaning you can take off like a rocket whenever you feel like doing so. Additionally, EVs have lower operating costs than traditional gas-powered cars. With fewer moving parts and no need for engine oil changes or transmission service, you can go farther 10 before needing maintenance. Why Buy a Used Tesla Model Y? Few crossovers on sale provide the unique experience of a Model Y. Owners looking for a family vehicle will appreciate its copious cargo space and ability to haul up to seven people, thanks to the optional third row. You will also benefit from the peace of mind of high safety ratings backed by test after test and endless enjoyment from the built-in tech. Performance models will allow you to experience supercar-like acceleration surpassing most gas-powered vehicles. When it comes to purchasing used, Model Ys — like all Teslas — see high resale values and less depreciation than most other cars. Should you be searching for a used Model Y for sale, a higher price for a used Model Y isn’t a negative. Over three years, a new Model Y will lose about 23% of its value, so when it comes time for you to sell, you’ll be able to recoup much of your purchase price. For example, if you were to purchase a 2021 Tesla Model Y and keep it for a year, the first owner would have experienced most of the already small depreciation. You could then sell your used Tesla Model Y for nearly what you paid. Find a Used Tesla Model Y for Sale with EV Universe The electric cars Tesla produces have taken the world by storm. Tesla Model Y FAQs Here are some of the most common questions prospective Tesla buyers have. How Much is a Cheap Tesla Model Y? The cheapest new Model Y starts at around $46,990. When you find a used Tesla Y for sale, however, you can spend thousands less and get more features than a new, option-free base model. How Long Do Tesla Model Y Motors Last? The longevity of a Tesla motor is currently 100,000 miles or more. Tesla’s warranty provides a new motor if it fails before 100,000 miles or eight years. How Long Do Tesla Model Y Batteries Last? With proper care and charging behavior, 300,000+ miles is the expected typical lifespan of Model Y batteries. Why are Brand-New Model Ys So Expensive? The answer lies mainly in the level of demand, with the Model Y being the current highest-selling car in the world. However, prices of new models rose slightly earlier in 2023 due to stock prices falling because of Tesla’s price-cutting. Also, Teslas generally are more expensive because of the technology the company puts into each vehicle.
